Packing is often the most time-consuming part of any house move. After helping hundreds of families move across Swansea and South Wales, our team has learned what works and what does not. Here are our top 10 packing tips to make your next move as smooth as possible.
1. Start Packing Early
Do not leave packing to the last minute. Start at least 2-3 weeks before your move date with rooms you use least — spare bedrooms, lofts, and garages. This spreads the work out and reduces stress as moving day approaches.
2. Declutter Before You Pack
Moving is the perfect opportunity to get rid of things you no longer need. Go through each room and sort items into keep, donate, sell, and bin piles. The less you have to pack, the faster and cheaper your move will be. Consider selling items on Facebook Marketplace or donating to local Swansea charities.
3. Invest in Quality Packing Materials
Good boxes make a huge difference. Use sturdy, double-walled cardboard boxes rather than old supermarket boxes that may collapse. You will also need bubble wrap, packing paper, strong tape, and marker pens. If you do not want to buy materials, our packing service includes all materials.
4. Pack Room by Room
Keep items from each room together. This makes unpacking at your new home much easier — you can take each box straight to the right room. Label boxes with both the contents and the destination room.
5. Label Everything Clearly
Write on at least two sides of every box so labels are visible when stacked. Include the room name and a brief description of contents. Use colour-coded stickers if you want to be extra organised — one colour per room. Mark fragile boxes clearly on all sides.
6. Protect Fragile Items Properly
Wrap each fragile item individually in bubble wrap or packing paper. Use plenty of padding at the bottom and top of boxes. Stand plates on their edges rather than flat — they are much less likely to break. Fill any gaps with scrunched paper or clothing to prevent movement during transit.
7. Use Clothing and Towels as Padding
Your clothes, towels, and bed linens are excellent free padding material. Wrap fragile ornaments in jumpers, cushion glasses with socks, and fill gaps in boxes with tea towels. This saves money on bubble wrap and packs two things at once.
8. Pack an Essentials Box
Pack a clearly labelled box of things you will need immediately at your new home: kettle, mugs, tea and coffee, toilet roll, phone chargers, basic toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, and any medication. Keep this box with you rather than loading it on the van, so you can access it straight away.
9. Do Not Overpack Boxes
A common mistake is making boxes too heavy. Heavy items like books should go in small boxes. Lighter items like bedding and cushions can fill larger boxes. As a rule of thumb, if you cannot comfortably lift the box yourself, it is too heavy. This also prevents boxes from breaking during the move.
